Northwest Southern Baptist Church // History

Northwest Southern Baptist Church was formed as a mission of Wetmore Baptist Church in 1961 with George Callahan as the first pastor. Wetmore was unable to support the mission after a while and it was turned over to First Southern Baptist Church. On March 17, 1963 Northwest became a self-supporting church with a budget of $2,128.00, paying the pastor $357.00 the first year. The church grew from 32 members and an average Sunday School attendance of 39 in 1963 to 95 members and an average Sunday School attendance of 61 by 1969. A new building was needed and under the leadership of Pastor Lyle Harmon the church built a new sanctuary, (our present fellowship hall) which was dedicated April 12, 1970. An addition was added to the north end of this building for educational space in 1972.

Membership in the 1970’s continued to grow with an average of 12 baptisms per year. Membership in 1971 was 113 with an average attendance in Sunday School of 92. This attendance remained consistent until the early 1980’s when it dropped into the 60’s. But in 1985 the church began to grow again and more space was soon needed. Under the leadership of Pastor Dan Pann a new sanctuary seating approximately 220 was completed in December of 1987. The church continued to grow in the 1990’s under the leadership of Pastor Keith Kersey until he was called to a church in his home state of Georgia in July 1995. After his resignation, the church experienced some difficulty under the next pastor. Attendance dropped off in the next year and a half until only about 35 were attending on Sunday morning. Although all bills were paid, the subsequent drop in income made it difficult for the church to meet its obligations. After a series of interim ministers, in March of 1998 Lee Mowery was called as pastor. Since then, the Lord has steadily grown the church with more than 210 additions, many by baptism, and blessed the church financially. With the purchase of additional property we have been able to add an annex which is currently used for youth activities and Sunday School. In addition the church has upgraded the existing facilities. God is moving at Northwest Baptist Church and we praise Him for letting us be a part of what He is doing in our community.
